Liparische Inseln: Stromboli
Mit 3000 m Höhe übertrifft der Vulkankegel des Stromboli seine wesentlich berühmteren Nachbarn deutlich. Allerdings sind hiervon nur die obersten 926 m zu sehen, der Rest liegt unter dem Meresspiegel. Der Stromboli ist immer noch ständig aktiv. Die unregelmäßigen größeren und kleineren Eruptionen sind so typisch für den Stromboli, daß diese Art von Vulkanaktivität eine eigene Bezeichnung, die sogenannte Strombolische Aktivität erhalten hat. Knapp zwei Kilometer nordöstlich vor der Insel ragt ein kleiner unbewohnter Fels aus dem Meer, der Strombolicchio, auf dem sich nur ein Leuchtturm befindet.
With a height of 3000 m the volcanic cone of Stromboli surpasses its well-known neighbours Aetna or Vesuvius by far. Unfortunately only the top 926 m are visible, the rest is below sea-level. Stromboli is still active and shows a special pattern of eruptions known as 'Strombolian Eruption'. Two kms north-east of the island Strombolicchio a small and uninhabited rock with a lighthouse on top is jutting out of the sea.
Kein Hafen sondern nur ein Anlegesteg erwartet uns auf der Insel Stromboli. Wiederholt hatten wir von Salina aus einige Explosionswolken auf dem Berg beobachtet. Hier von der Ortschaft Stromboli aus zeigt sich der Berg von seiner ruhigen Seite.
No harbour just a landing stage was our first impression of Stromboli.
From Salina we had already seen clouds indicating eruptions on top of the mountain. From the village of Stramboli however the mountain looked quite peaceful.
Nur wenige Badegäste säumten den dunklen Sandstrand (1988). Der 50 m hohe Strombolicchio ist der Ur-Stromboli, der Überrest des einstigen Vulkans 2 km nordöstlich der Insel.

Die engen Gassen prägen das Bild der Ortschaft Stromboli. Es gibt zwar Dreiräder aber so gut wie keine Autos und keine grösseren Strassen auf der Insel. Von unserem Zimmer in einem kleinen Turm hatten wir einen guten Blick zum Vulkan. Abends waren wir bei Wolfgang Müller zu Gast, einem berühmten Vulkanforscher, dem es besonders der Ätna angetan hat aber auch andere Vulkane wie der Ol Doinyo Lengai. Narrow alleys are typical for the village of Stromboli. As cars are not allowed on the island three-wheelers or scooters are dominating. From our flat we had a nice panorama of the volcano. In the evening we met Wolfgang Mueller, a famous vulcanologist who has a special interest in Etna but also other volcanoes like Ol Doinyo Lengai. |
Kurz nach der Ortschaft Stromboli beginnt die Wildnis. Es gibt lediglich noch den Ort Ginostra am Westufer der Insel – erreichbar per Schiff oder zu Fuss über den Gipfel des Stromboli. Gegen Abend machten wir uns auf Richtung Stromboli, zuerst nach Westen und dann entlang der Sciara del Fuoco hinauf zum Gipfel. Heute gibt es einen neue Anstiegsroute, direkt über die Nordostflanke.
Wilderness starts just beyond the village of Stromboli. The second village on the island is Ginostra on the west-coast which can only be accessed by ship or by crossing the summit of Stromboli.
In the late afternoon we started the ascent following the 'Sciara del Fuoco' up to the summit. Today there is another popular ascent route directly up the north-eastern slopes.

Etwa alle 15 Minuten schiesst mit einem Zischen eine Lavafontäne aus einer Bocca. Deutlich zu erkennen sind die ballistischen Parabelbahnen der hochgeschleuderten Lava. Unbedingt ein kleines Stativ mitnehmen.
Every 15 minutes lava fountains had been shooting out of a 'Bocca'.
The parabolic curves of the thrown-out lava can best be taken using a tripod.
