Liparische Inseln: Vulcano

Vulcano is the southmost of the Aeolian Islands and just about 20 km away from the northern coast of Sicily. Like the other islands of the archipelago it is of volcanic origin. Fossa is the second active volcano of the Aeolian Islands clearly visible (and smellable) by the activity of fumaroles. Among vulcanologists this volcano is still rated as potentially dangerous. The last eruption is dated back to 1890 where lava bombs of several tons were thrown out of the crater. Today the volcanism mainly serves as a touristic attraction, the healing effect of the mineral containing mudbaths was already appreciated by the ancient Romans and Greeks.

The sulfur vapors of the crater rim are already visible from Ponte di Levante.  A one hours' walk on a footpath leads up to the rim of the crater.

The volcano itself is characterised as rather dangerous and permanently surveyed.

Yellow remainders of sulphur are formed around the fumaroles and provide a strong smell of rotten eggs.

This bomb was thrown out during the last eruption in 1890. One can imagine the force of the explosions which arise if Magma comes into contact with sea-water (phreatomagmatic eruption). After we had circulated the crater we went back passing the fumaroles with their pungent smell. Right of the center we could see the bay and the mud pool (see next picture).

After the bath we were accompanied by a smell of sulphur for days.
