Pfänder is supposed to be 'the' panorama peak of Lake Constance, especially when the sun goes down behind the western part of the lake. A trip to Pfänder is therefore worthwhile in (nearly) all kinds of weather. Maria Bildstein near the town of Bregenz and Karren near Dornbirn are also nice vantage points with a view across the Rhine Valley to the nearby mountains of Bregenzerwald and Alpstein.

A mix of sandstones, marl and a type of conglomerate rock called Nagelfluh is typical for this region.

The panorama can slightly differ from those on the postcards but at least we could spot the pyramid of Widderstein.

Maria Bildstein

The Swiss mountains seen from Bildstein Church which is situated between Bregenz and Dornbirn on the Austrian side of the Rhine Valley.

Karren

The top of Karren above the town of Dornbirn can also be reached by cableway. In the background left we can see the snow-covered summit of Säntis, the Alpstein foothills and finally Lake Constance and Pfänder to the right.
