Zwei erloschene Vulkane locken zum Bergsteigen in der Türkei. Der Erciyes Dagh, das Wahrzeichen von Kayseri, formte vor Jahrmillionen durch seine Ausbrüche die berühmte Tuffsteinlandschaft von Kappadokien. Ausgangspunkt für die Besteigung ist eine kleine Hütte an der Talstation des Sessellifts. Für den Auf- und Abstieg benötigt man von hier aus gute 12 Stunden. Der Hauptgipfel erfordert noch eine kurze Seillänge Kletterei (Schwierigkeitsgrad ca. III).

Die Besteigung des Ararat beginnt in der Ortschaft Dogubayazit, wo auch die Besteigungsformalitäten abgeklärt werden. Nach einer staubigen LKW Fahrt wandert man anschliessend noch 2 Stunden durch Steppengras ins Basislager. Am nächsten Tag geht es etwas mühselig durch Schutt zum Hochlager auf 4400 m, den flachen Gletscher betritt man erst wenige hundert Meter unterhalb des Gipfels.

Two extinct volcanoes can be climbed in Turkey. Erciyes Dagh is the symbol of the town of Kayseri and the tuff area of Kappadokia which he formed some million years ago. A small hut near the cableway station is the starting point for the ascent. It takes about 12 hours to climb the summit and return again. Before the main summit there is a short rope length of climbing (approx. grade III).

The ascent of Ararat starts at the village of Dogubayazit where also the formalities necessary for the ascent are carried through. After a dusty ride on trucks and a two hours hike the base-camp is reached. During the next day we move up (sometimes a little bit tiresome) through debris to the second camp at 4400 m. The flat glacier is not entered until some hundred meters below the summit.
