Kirgistan: Bishkek - Issyk-Kul

The Tian Shan is a Central Asian mountain range located in China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It contains some of the largest non-polar glaciers as well as quite a few peaks above 6.000 m up to Pik Pobeda (7.439 m) the highest peak in Kyrgyzstan. Our trekking to the glaciers of this impressive region started in Bishkek (former Frunse) the capital of Kyrgyzstan with approximately 900.000 inhabitants. From Bishkek we took the bus to Karakol (400 km), the starting point for trekking tours and climbs in the Tian Shan Range.

Osch Bazar is the biggest market in Bishkek and a place where almost everything is available: fruit and vegetables, spices and cosmetics, carpets and the famous kirgisian felt hats as well as spare parts for automobiles.

After a 1.5 hours bus ride from Bishkek towards Karakol we stopped at the archaeological excavations of Burana near the village of Tokmak. The ancient tower built between the 10th and 12th century was originally a 45 m minaret of which only the bottom part remained. Today a narrow and dark spiral staircase (don't forget your torch) leads on top of the panorama platform 24 m above the ground. The excavations and a small historical museum are located next to the tower.

Issyk-Kul the 'warm' lake is the second largest mountain lake in the world (1.600 m) after Lake Titicaca. It is about 180 km long, 60 km wide, up to 704 m deep and covers an area of 6236 square kilometers. As it has no outlet to the sea its salt content is about 6 per mill which is one of the reasons that the lake is not freezing in winter. The road is continuing for almost 200 km along the northern shores always in view of the 5.000 m peaks of the Terskej Alatoo.
