Shyok- und Nubratal: Khardung La - Sumur
Um militärisch im Nubratal, der Waffenstillstandslinie mit Pakistan, präsent zu sein, wurde die Passstrasse über den Khardung La gebaut. Sie ist seit 1994 auch für den Reiseverkehr geöffnet und verbindet Leh mit dem Shyok- und dem Nubratal nördlich von Leh zwischen der Ladakh- und der Karakorum Kette, welche zum indischen Teil des Karakorum Gebirges gehören.
Khardung La is one of the highest traversable pass roads worldwide and was originally built for military purposes. In 1994 it was also opened for tourist traffic and is now connecting Leh with the Shyok- and Nubra valley north of Leh between the Ladakh- and Karakoram range which belong to the Indian part of the Karakoram.
Bei einer Rast auf der Südseite des Khardung La blicken wir zurück nach Süden auf die Oase von Leh. Jenseits des Indus sind die Ortschaft Stok und die Berge der Stok Gruppe erkennbar.
During a stop on the south side of Khardung La, looking back down to the oasis of Leh. On the other side of the Indus river we can see the village of Stok and the mountains of the Stok range.
Die ernorme Höhe des Khardung La Passes fiel uns schon 1979 vom Basislager des Stok Kangri auf. Die Strasse wurde damals nur vom Militär benutzt.
Already in 1979 we noticed the enormous height of Khardung La seen from the base camp of Stok Kangri. At that time the road was only used for military purpose.
Eigene GPS-Messungen, sowie auch Angaben anderer Passfahrer deuten darauf hin, dass der Khardung La etwa 5360 m hoch ist und nicht 5600 m.
Our own GPS measurements as well as those of other people who travelled the pass indicate that the top of Khardung La is just about 5.360 m instead of 5.600 m.

Das Tal des Shyok Flusses trennt die Ladakh Kette vom Karakorum. Von rechts mündet das Nubratal ein, welches den Siachengletscher entwässert.
The Shyok river is separating the Ladakh range from the Karakoram. The valley to the right is Nubra valley which is draining the Siachen glacier.
Bei der Ortschaft Sumur statten wir dem Gelugpa Kloster Samtan Ling einen Besuch ab. Es wurde 1842 von Lama Tsultim Nyima erbaut, der 1833 Rizong gegründet hatte.
Near the village of Sumur we visit the Gelugpa monastery Samtan Ling which was built in 1842 by Lama Tsultim Nyima, the founder of Rizong monastery (1833).
